Once CBD starts to take effect approximately an hour or two later, the effects are relatively long-lasting. One study on mice found that the average time ingested CBD stayed in the body was 4.2 hours. This is known as the “mean residence time”.

It’s quite common for people to feel the effects of CBD for up to 6 or 8 hours after ingestion.

In terms of CBD’s half-life, an NCBI study reported it to be 3.21 hours after consuming capsules containing 10 mg of liquid CBD. This means exactly half the CBD remains at the 3.2-hour mark.

2. Inhalation: CBD Duration

When inhaled by either smoking or vaporizing, CBD has a higher bioavailability (approximately 31%). This is because the membranes lining the lung air sacs absorb it into the bloodstream almost immediately. It’s able to bypass the first-pass liver metabolism.

This form of intake is both fast-acting and short-lived. It’s cleared from the body the fastest.

3. Topical CBD: Duration

When CBD is applied topically, it’s absorbed by the skin, which activates the endocannabinoid receptors located there. It doesn’t take long for the effects to be felt, with some people reporting it to be as little as 15 minutes.

This is because the CBD activates the CBD receptors locally in the skin tissue, instead of relying on entering the bloodstream in order to go to the affected area.

It doesn’t have to pass through the digestive system, and such a small amount of CBD is actually absorbed that it has little to no effect on liver metabolism. The effects are felt quickly (usually within 15 to 30 minutes) and are relatively long-lasting, at around four to six hours after consumption.

One NCBI study reported the half-life to be 10.86 hours after using an oral spray containing 20 mg of CBD.

Other Drugs Can Affect How Long CBD Stays in the Body

Although studies suggest that CBD is safe to use and consume regularly and in high doses, and with minimal side-effects, it still has the ability to interact with other substances as any compound can.

Some drugs can interfere with how CBD is metabolized, causing it to be removed faster, or remain in the system longer than it normally would.

The cytochrome P450 (also known as CYP45) is a group of enzymes involved in the liver’s metabolizing process, dealing with more than 60% of drugs and toxins in the body. Doctors make calculations using the average amount of time it takes for a medication to be processed by these enzymes, as they provide accurate information regarding the dosage.

By inhibiting the CYP450 system, CBD can deactivate its activity temporarily, which can cause a build-up in the metabolizing process, meaning it can stay in your system for longer.

Consumption of CBD and coffee together may also extend the time the former stays in your body. Both are broken down by the same enzymes, and consuming both at the same time can mean that the liver has too much to metabolize at once. The metabolizing process, therefore, slows down, increasing the time it takes for the CBD to leave the body completely.

Can CBD Levels Build Up in the Body?

One study on this topic focused on people with Huntington’s disease taking high doses of CBD (700 mg daily) orally for six weeks, then stopping. The 5.9 to 11.2 ng/mL levels of CBD recorded during that time dropped to just 1.5 ng/mL a week after discontinuation of the treatment. After that, they were virtually undetectable.

As a result, the half-life of CBD when regularly consumed orally at high doses was estimated to be between two and five days. This is the highest possible half-life out of all consumption methods. Additionally, the study suggested that CBD levels can build up inside the body when consumed regularly.

However, the study also showed that, once the course of CBD has stopped, it will not stay in your system for longer than a week.

There are many factors that affect how long CBD remains in the system after you use it.

Cannabis and all its derivatives have been strictly regulated (if not completely prohibited) around most of the world until very recently. This is primarily due to its psychoactive effect — also called being ‘high’ or ‘stoned’ — when consumed.

However, this effect is caused by a separate compound called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), not cannabidiol (CBD).

The short answer to the question, “will CBD get me high” is resounding no. 

In this article, we’ll explain in full why CBD can’t get you high and how to tell which products may have psychoactive effects.

Quick Answer: Why CBD Won’t Get You High?

CBD should not be confused with THC — the latter being the cannabinoid responsible for the psychoactive effects felt after consuming marijuana.

CBD has been shown to have multiple positive cognitive effects, with the consumer often experiencing feelings of peacefulness and relaxation. It can even be used to directly treat stress- and anxiety-related disorders. However, it does not bind to the brain’s CB receptors as THC does, and the outcome is totally different from the ‘stoned’ or ‘high’ feeling associated with marijuana use.

Under federal law, CBD extract cannot contain more than 0.3% THC — which is nowhere near enough to get you high.

What’s the Difference Between THC & CBD?

CBD and THC are not to be confused. There are some stark differences that, once explained, will make the distinction clear.

Let’s start with some background information about the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS has the primary function of promoting homeostasis (balance) throughout the entire body. It does this through the regulation of various biological processes and systems, including the digestive system, the immune system, the central nervous system, and the cardiovascular system. Some experts refer to the ECS as “the bridge between the body and the mind.”

So How Does THC Get You High?

When THC enters the body, it binds directly to primary cannabinoid (CB1) receptors in the brain and spinal cord, which produces different cognitive and physical effects on both the brain and the body, respectively. It can influence pain perception, mood, appetite, and memory, among others, with users often feeling very relaxed, tired, and/or euphoric. This is the ‘high’ commonly associated with marijuana.

CBD, conversely, is not able to directly activate the CB1 receptors. Instead, it interacts with the ECS by modulating the receptors and encouraging the production of our naturally-occurring endocannabinoids.

CBD may also boost levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the body — which is a neurotransmitter responsible for relaxation. When we become mentally overstimulated, GABA activity increases to lower blood pressure and slow the heart rate, which effectively relaxes and de-stresses the body and mind.

How Does CBD Make You Feel?

Despite promoting feelings of relaxation and peacefulness, the effects of CBD are nothing like the high experienced after consuming THC. This is because CBD does not directly bind to the CB1 receptors as THC does.

It’s common for people to feel the following after consuming CBD:

• Relaxed physically (CBD can relieve muscle tension)
• De-stressed and less anxious
• Calm and peaceful
• Free from pain (CBD can have analgesic properties)
• Focused

Is CBD Psychoactive?

This is a tricky question. The Merriam-Webster definition of psychoactive is “affecting the mind or behavior” — and while CBD can’t get you high, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s completely non-psychoactive.

Let’s look at THC first as a benchmark. There’s no question that, when consumed, it affects the mind (hence the terms “high” and “stoned”), and studies have shown that it can also affect behavior. For example, heavy use can increase anxiety, which can cause the behavior to alter, and long-term chronic use can even induce psychosis in some cases. It’s also widely accepted that it can cause changes in motor skills and sensory perception.

CBD certainly affects the mind. As we’ve already explained, it can promote feelings of relaxation, reduce anxiety, and boost mood. It’s also been shown to encourage the production of serotonin in the body, which can lead to feelings of happiness. It could be argued that this can cause the consumer to, therefore alter their behavior — which would make it psychoactive by definition.

However, there’s no doubt that its psychoactive effect is completely different to that experienced after consuming THC.

Do Some CBD Extracts Contain THC?

It’s important to note that there are different “types” of CBD available on the market. A CBD isolate will have been isolated in a laboratory from all the other compounds contained in the cannabis plant, so you know you’re consuming pure CBD only.

Broad-spectrum CBD contains isolated CBD that’s been mixed with other cannabinoids and/or terpenes in a laboratory (for example, CBD may be mixed with CBDA, CBG, and CBC, as well as the limonene terpene for flavoring). Although broad-spectrum CBD extracts sometimes contain THC, most often, they do not.

Full-spectrum CBD, however, contains everything found in the cannabis plant, which obviously includes THC. This is generally the preferred type of extract, as consuming all the matter in the plant together has one key benefit: the entourage effect. This is a natural phenomenon that occurs when all the compounds work in synergy to deliver the maximum benefits possible. Synergy in plant medicines is a medically accepted concept, and cannabis is no different.

But there’s no need to worry — it’s possible to consume a full-spectrum CBD extract without worrying about THC’s psychoactive effects. This is where the legality comes into play — and it’s less complicated than it sounds.

What’s The Legal Limit of THC?

In the US, although restrictions vary according to state law, federal law stipulates that any extract with a THC content of over 0.3% is illegal. This is the same in many other parts of the world.

Hemp-derived CBD will never contain more than 0.3% THC. And levels of THC this low will, in no way, get you high — even if you consume a high dose of your full-spectrum CBD extract.

Unfortunately, the CBD industry is fairly loosely regulated — primarily because it’s still in its relative infancy — so there have been some cases of CBD extracts being found to contain levels of THC higher than the legal limit. Charlotte was a toddler who suffered from terrible epileptic seizures, brought on by a genetic condition known as Dravet Syndrome. That’s a rare and serious form of epilepsy that can strike otherwise-healthy infants by age one, and it has historically been extremely difficult to treat effectively. Charlotte experienced her first seizure when she was three months old.

Her mother, in search of alternative treatment, decided that marijuana might be worth considering. The limited supply she found ran out quickly so she consulted with a group of pot breeders and growers, the Stanley brothers in Colorado, who created a strain that was low in psychoactive THC but high in cannabidiol content. (Cannabidiol is the full name of CBD).

And it worked. Her grand mal seizures were drastically reduced from 300 per week to only four per month, and Charlotte was able to live a normal life for the first time. Her story was made famous by a CNN documentary and 60 Minutes, as well as international print reports. High-CBD medical marijuana became an accepted treatment for Dravet Syndrome and was legalized for that purpose in many states.

The strain created for Charlotte was renamed “Charlotte’s Web,” and once CBD became legal across America, the Stanley brothers ensured that it contained less than 0.3% THC so it could be sold everywhere, for every purpose. And a few years after the breakthrough, the FDA approved the first drug containing CBD for the treatment of childhood epilepsy – based largely on the work of the Stanleys.

Sadly, Charlotte died in early 2021. However, the Stanley brothers still produce the CBD oil they created for her and sell it along with a variety of other CBD products under the brand name Charlotte’s Web CBD (CW for short).

Clearly, the oil works well for children with Dravet Syndrome. Will it work for everyone else?

Charlotte’s Web has continued to add new products to their line, all designed and manufactured with the same expertise and care. And as they’ve grown, they’ve acquired several related operations like Abacus Health, which makes several high-quality lines of CBD topical products like CBD Medic.

The company has expanded in other ways, too. Their philanthropic outreach programs work with organizations providing wellness solutions for children and families; groups providing adaptive training for veterans and first responders; organizations working to help women in need to build new life opportunities, and groups working to elevate sustainable and organic farming. 2% of Charlotte’s Web’s pre-tax revenue goes to help fund those programs.

And CW is a self-certified “B Corporation,” meaning they balance shareholders’ interests with those of employees, clients, local communities, and the environment.

The Stanley Brothers say their inspiration is the saying “Do well by doing good,” and they definitely walk the walk. But the more important question is whether their products are still as good as their intentions and their early work.

Charlotte’s Web CBD: The Approach

For Charlotte Figi to benefit so impressively from Charlotte’s Web CBD, it had to be a high-quality product. From all indications, the company has maintained those standards as it’s grown over the years.

They use organically-grown hemp sourced from family farms in three states known for producing quality plants: Colorado, Kentucky, and Oregon, all long-term CW partners. Cannabidiol is then extracted from the hemp via either ethanol extraction or the supercritical CO2 method. There’s currently a debate in the industry about which is better, but both are safe and clean processes, and they’re the two top choices a producer can use.

Most of Charlotte’s Web’s CBD products contain full-spectrum cannabidiol, meaning that all of the hemp’s naturally-occurring terpenes, flavonoids, and cannabinoids (including that <0.3% of THC) are retained. That enhances the performance of the CBD by what’s called the entourage effect. Some topical products are deliberately produced with CBD isolate instead; the lack of any THC content ensures that users won’t accidentally score a positive result on drug tests.

The company uses several different carrier oils for its products, including MCT coconut oil and extra-virgin olive oil. We’re not too concerned about that last fact, however, because this company clearly puts a lot of thought into the design of its CBD products – and when it comes to performance, to use the phrase we used earlier, Charlotte’s Web walks the walk.

Oh, one other thing before we move on: These products are priced right around the market average, even though the company would have been able to charge a premium based on its brand name and recognition.

Charlotte’s Web CBD Oils

Yes, you can still purchase the “revised” version of the full-spectrum CBD oil that the Stanley Brothers created for Charlotte called, not surprisingly, “Original Formula.” It’s still produced in small batches and is a potent oil at 50mg/ml. Olive oil is used as a carrier in the natural flavor option, and MCT coconut oil is the carrier in the mint chocolate-flavored variety. The flavoring agents are natural and organic.

That’s not the only Charlotte’s Web CBD oil on the menu. Other versions of the flagship product are sold, with potency choices of 7mg/ml, 17mg/ml, and 60mg/ml, and in flavors like lemon twist and orange blossom as well as natural and mint chocolate. Again, all flavorings are from organic essential oils and no other ingredients are added.

Charlotte’s Web CBD Capsules

One of the things we like about this company is that they don’t throw in a lot of unnecessary “stuff” when designing and manufacturing their products. Their CBD capsules, for example, contain just full-spectrum cannabidiol and olive oil as a carrier; the leak-proof capsules are vegan, gluten-free, and kosher and available in dosages of 15 or 25 milligrams apiece. You couldn’t ask for much more.

It’s common for CBD producers to use CBD isolate in their edible products. That’s not the best idea, because the effectiveness of cannabidiol is already lowered when it must first be processed in the digestive system. The absence of an entourage effect contributed by full-spectrum CBD makes edibles even less potent.

The first group (Charlotte’s Web CBD topicals) includes a cream, a balm, and a roll-on oil blend designed for application to smaller areas. There are three different types of dog chews, each containing 2.5 milligrams of full-spectrum cannabidiol and added ingredients to help with either hip and joint pain, anxiety, or the cognition decline often suffered by older dogs. They’re all chicken-flavored and all-natural. Finally, the Charlotte’s Web CBD-infused balm for dogs moisturizes skin, supports skin health, and helps ease irritations.
